Throughout the museum, the building's historic features are clearly visible. Moyse's Hall has had a chequered past it was used as a tavern, gaol, police station and railway parcels office before opening as a museum in 1899. Following extensive refurbishment, the museum reopened in 2002 with the addition of the Suffolk Regiment Gallery and an education room.
